Sclerotherapy
How common are venous problems of the legs?
Up to 60% of all adult Americans eventually have some evidence of these problems.
What are the symptoms of varicose veins?
They are unsightly, and can over time ache, burn, itch, and cause swelling.
What are the causes of spider and varicose veins?
Weakening of the walls and valves of the veins can be due to heredity, aging, trauma, hormone fluctuations as in pregnancy, longterm overweight or a lifestyle requiring prolonged standing. Since these veins are not needed for circulation, we don't repair them, we eliminate them.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
Sclerotherapy is performed at the Norris Cosmetic only by Dr. Lutzker. He uses tiny (30 Gauge) needles to inject Sotradecol an FDA approved fluid (called a sclerosant) into spider or varicose veins (red, purple or blue veins). The fluid causes the vessel walls to fuse shut. Since the vessel is no longer functional, the body absorbs the vessel so the result is permanent. The vessels may take a few weeks to a few months to disappear.
How comfortable is the treatment?
The treatment is so comfortable most patients do without anesthesia, although a few prefer a mild numbing cream.
How am I limited after the treatment?
This non-surgical, non-invasive technique permits normal activity the same day. However vigorous exercise and hot baths should be delayed for 3-4 days. While vigorous exercise will do no harm, it might diminish the effectiveness of the treatment.
How can I prevent Varicose Veins?
Try to prevent long periods of sitting or standing. Mild exercise is helpful. Avoid crossing your legs and wearing high heels which do not allow calf muscles to drive blood back to the heart, thereby taking pressure off the leg veins.
Summary
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that is virtually painless. The treatment takes less than an hour, permits normal activity the same day and results in permanent improvement.
